When someone is hurting, when they feel alone, when they have no one to turn to because their friends abandoned them in their hour of need, or the people around them are insensitive and too busy pushing fake, cringe-worthy personas online, you should always reach out. Always. If you don’t, you’re not one of the team. Do unto others etc.
However, don’t make the mistake of believing that that person is some poor innocent soul, just because they are hurting. It just seems that way…they’re fragile, in pain, abused, betrayed etc. But without an iota of self-awareness or shame, they’d readily betray, abuse or hurt someone else in the same way as they have been. If it’s their friend that’s hurting they’ll ignore their pain just as theirs is ignored. After you’ve picked someone up off the ground, they’ll go rejoin the friends who ignored their strife in the first place, and become as heartless as them once again.
People are like this because they live in fear; too scared to colour outside the lines. They conform and default to being shallow, deceitful, and as attention-seeking as their phones allow them.
You risk becoming isolated, but don’t let that stop you from doing the right thing. Never be one of them. They’re the enemy. Don’t let them infect you with a cynicism that would stop you from doing the right thing in the future. It’s what makes you human. People are in it for themselves. I always say, we’re all in it together.
